Better Living Through Chemistry?

Josh over at the Daily Della turned me on to the Smart Plastics Guide (.pdf download) which is put out by the Institue for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

I have to admit that I’m a bigger user of plastic than I should be, especially knowing the environmental and health risks associated with it. I’m guilty of using plastic water bottles, even though I know that polycarbonate plastics leach toxic chemicals, and those rare times that I use a microwave, I’m usually nuking something in a plastic container. I know it’s bad, but I’m such a slave to convenience that I do it anyway.

I really hadn’t given much thought to the fact that baby bottles are typically made of plastic. I was suprised to learn how many plastic baby bottles (and apparently “training” or “sippy” cups as well) are made of polycarbonate. The guide specifically calls out some brands to avoid, including our favorite - Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow. Great bottle…really does reduce colic, spit-up, burping and gas as advertised…but maybe it’s time to consider a different brand?
